Berlin Mapping

In august 2007 we scheduled a trip to Berlin to get to know it better: we were not looking for a groovy bar where to spend the evening but for a Kiez with good vibrations. We needed to do our homework and dig out what Berlin meant to us NOW.

We were curious to discover more about Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, as these areas were quoted in many articles in lifestyle magazines as the groovy places.

However when talking about real estate Zehlendorf, Wilmersdorf, Steglitz, Charlottenburg and Schoeneberg kept popping up. We were intrigued. And Berlin is such a sprawling and diverse metropolitan area.

– book EasyJet

– find a B&B in one of the areas we wanted to explore, but conveniently located also as a starting point to explore other target Kiez

– set up cappuccino-talks with friends and contacts who live or commute to Berlin for their guts-feeling impressions and more importantly, for understanding Berliners’ set of criteria when looking for a home

– set up a few appointments with one or more Makler (real estate agents) in order to better understand options but also transaction costs…difficult at mid-august, but not impossible in Germany

A market research holiday, but we left some time for impromptu clubbing, rich cultural Szene harvesting and leafy Biergarten breaks!
